Chandigarh, November 23

A police constable Jaspal Singh was killed while six other policemen sustained injuries after Nihangs indiscriminately opened fire on a police party at Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala on early Thursday morning. The Incident took place following a confrontation between Nihangs and police personnel at the Akal Bunga Gurudwara. Tensions escalated as two Nihang factions vied for control over the Gurdwara Akal Bunga for the past two days. The situation worsened when policemen attempted to evacuate the Gurdwara, currently under the control of one Nihang faction led by Mann Singh, and Nihang Sikhs inside the Gurdwara opened fire and killed Jaspal Singh and injured six policemen.

Police said that Gurdwara was under the control of Baba Budha Dal led by Nihang Balbir Singh for the past few years. However, Man Singh on November 21 forcibly took control of Gurdwara. After the incident, the police registered a case against Man Singh acting on a complaint of Jagjit Singh.

Punjab ADGP Arpit Shukla said that an incident of unprovoked firing on a police party took place in Sultanpur Lodhi. The Chief Minister of Punjab has announced a compensation of Rs. 2 crore. “A job would also be given to his children. We have registered a case under section 302 and 5 people have been arrested,” he added.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister, Bhagwant Singh Mann, on Thursday expressed profound grief and sorrow over the death of home guard Jawan Jaspal Singh who laid down his life in the line of duty and announced Rs 2 crore as financial assistance to his family.

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said that Jaspal Singh had died while performing his duty at Sultanpur Lodhi.  He said that out of this Rs 2 crore, Rs 1 crore will be given as ex-gratia by the state government whereas another payment of insurance cover worth Rs 1 crore will be made by the HDFC bank. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that this initiative is in recognition of the immense contribution of this son of soil towards maintaining law and order in the state.

The Chief Minister also said that financial assistance to the family of Jaspal Singh is in consonance with the commitment of the state government to ensure the well-being of the soldiers (from Armed forces, paramilitary and Police) and their families. Bhagwant Singh Mann hoped that this humble initiative by the state would go a long way in helping the aggrieved family on the one hand and securing their future on the other.
