New Delhi, December 18

In an unprecedented move, a record number of 78 MPs were suspended including 33 from the Lok Sabha and 45 from the Rajya Sabha. Parliament has witnessed unprecedented events in the ongoing Winter Session, marked by escalating tensions and a record number of suspensions. A total of 92 MPs have been barred from attending proceedings, the highest ever in a single session, following their persistent protests over the December 13 Lok Sabha security breach.

The Lok Sabha on Monday witnessed high drama as 33 Opposition MPs, including Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, were suspended for displaying placards and disrupting proceedings. The protest stemmed from the recent security breach in Parliament, with the Opposition demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the issue. Recently,13 MPs nine of whom were from the Congress party were suspended from the Lok Sabha on the same issue.

The chaos unfolded as soon as Parliament convened for the day. Opposition MPs, armed with placards and raising slogans stormed the Well of the House. Despite repeated appeals from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to maintain order and return to their seats, the MPs continued their noisy protest, brandishing their placards and chanting slogans.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended the Speaker’s decision, maintaining that the Opposition’s placards and disruptive behavior were disrespectful to the sanctity of the House. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi accused the Opposition of attempting to politicize the security breach and stated that the government was committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure Parliament’s security.
