Vice President Dhankhar denounces MP’s Mimicry act as “shameful and unacceptable”

New Delhi, December 19

In an unprecedented move, 49 more Opposition MPs were suspended from Parliament for the remainder of the Winter Session on Tuesday. Parliament has witnessed unprecedented events in the ongoing Winter Session, marked by escalating tensions and a record number of suspensions.  A total of 141 MPs have been barred from attending proceedings, the highest ever in a single session, following their persistent protests over the December 13 Lok Sabha security breach.

A record number of 78 MPs were suspended including 33 from the Lok Sabha and 45 from the Rajya Sabha on December 18.

Amidst ongoing tensions over MP suspensions, Parliament witnessed a bizarre turn of events today, as a Trinamool Congress MP mimicked Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar during an opposition protest. The act sparked a major controversy after Dhankhar denounced it as “shameful and unacceptable.”

Kalyan Banerjee, the TMC MP in question, engaged in a mimicry of Dhankhar’s mannerisms and voice outside the Parliament’s Makar Dwar gate. Videos on social media showed fellow MPs chuckling at the performance, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi even capturing the scene on his phone.

Dhankhar, presiding over the Rajya Sabha, took strong exception to the mimicry, calling it “disrespectful” and “a violation of decorum.” In a stern address, he condemned the act as “unacceptable and unbecoming of an elected representative.”

“The office of the Chairman, Rajya Sabha, demands respect and dignity,” Dhankhar declared. “Such frivolous attempts to demean the high chair cannot be tolerated. This House must function with decorum and seriousness, and such actions undermine its very essence.”
