New Delhi, December 25

President Droupadi Murmu granted assent to three pivotal criminal justice bills on Monday, solidifying their transition into law. These bills were recently endorsed by Parliament, marking a transformative overhaul of the nation’s criminal justice system.

The triumvirate of laws, namely the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act, is poised to revolutionize the existing legal landscape. Offering precise definitions of various offenses and corresponding punishments, these bills signify a monumental departure from the antiquated colonial-era statutes.

The enactment of these laws signifies a significant departure from the dated legal framework established by the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872. These statutes, integral to India’s legal apparatus since the colonial era, are now supplanted by a more contemporary and comprehensive legal framework that responds to the evolving needs of the nation’s justice system.

The Rajya Sabha on December 21 unanimously passed three amended bills moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to overhaul the criminal justice system and  the Lok Sabha cleared the bills on December 20. Union Minister Shah had lauded the significance of three new bills, underscoring the Modi government’s unwavering commitment to combat crime and terrorism. Shah highlighted the legislative breakthroughs said that for the first time in history, our laws define terrorism, organized crimes, and economic offences, closing every legal gap.
