President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, asserted on Wednesday that the current composition of the UN Security Council does not align with the contemporary geopolitical reality of the world, emphasizing the imperative need for reform. In a media briefing following discussions with External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar during his five-day visit to India, Ambassador Francis highlighted the Security Council’s recent inability to make decisions aimed at enhancing global peace and security, according to media reports.

Ambassador Francis, on a diplomatic visit to India, strongly reiterated the necessity for reforming the UN Security Council. Taking to his X (formerly known as Twitter) account, he expressed pleasure in meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, praising India’s successful G20 Presidency. He detailed their extensive discussions on global peace and security challenges, addressing situations in Gaza, Ukraine, and Haiti. Ambassador Francis stressed the growing role of the UNGA in challenging times, advocated for UNSC reform, and emphasized the need for stronger multilateralism. He anticipates India’s ongoing constructive support for the General Assembly’s work, including the upcoming Summit of the Future.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar welcomed Dennis Francis to New Delhi, acknowledging his enthusiastic support for India’s G20 Presidency and initiatives representing the ‘Voice of Global South.’ Dr. Jaishankar particularly appreciated Francis’s call for urgent reforms in international institutions, including the UN Security Council. He echoed the emphasis on hastening progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and taking decisive climate action. Dr. Jaishankar expressed confidence in Francis’s leadership, anticipating equitable and ambitious outcomes from the Summit of the Future Process, with India ready to offer full support.
