In a significant political development, both former Pakistan Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan have asserted their claims to form a new government in Pakistan, as reported by the media. Amidst the backdrop of Pakistan’s ongoing economic crisis, the nation appears to be teetering on the brink of a serious political upheaval, with both Khan and Sharif asserting their electoral victories.
According to the BBC, fourteen National Assembly seats remain undetermined, all located in the expansive and sparsely-populated Balochistan province. The lack of a clear outcome prompted General Asim Munir to call upon all parties to demonstrate maturity and unity, emphasizing that the politics of polarization do not befit a progressive nation of 250 million people. Gen Munir remarked that elections should be viewed as an exercise to gauge the mandate of the people, rather than a zero-sum competition of winners and losers.
Meanwhile, The Guardian reported late on Friday that leaders from various parties had convened in Lahore, the power base of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), for discussions. Sharif, speaking from his party headquarters in the city, expressed openness to collaboration with other successful parties and candidates due to the lack of a sufficient majority to govern independently.
Additionally, an AI-generated video produced by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) credited Khan with claiming victory for the party, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding political scenario.
