NEW DELHI, MARCH 18
In a significant order, the Supreme Court on Monday directed the State Bank of India (SBI) to divulge the unique alphanumeric code on electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The Constitution bench of the Supreme Court presided over by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, addressed the electoral bonds matter during the hearing and instructed the Chairman and Managing Director of SBI to submit an affidavit by 5 pm on March 21. This affidavit should confirm that the bank has disclosed all relevant details of the bonds to the ECI.
Referring to previous orders on the issue, the Supreme Court emphasized the necessity for SBI to furnish comprehensive information regarding electoral bonds purchased since the interim order dated on April 12, 2019 till date to the ECI. The bench highlighted that these details must include the date of purchase of each electoral bond, the name of the purchaser, and the denomination of the electoral bond purchased, as stipulated in a prior court order.
