NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 24
In a significant development before the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have formed an alliance to jointly contest elections in Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Goa.
Announcing the seat sharing at a joint press conference, Congress leader Mukul Wasnik revealed the distribution of seats in Delhi, where AAP will contest four seats and Congress three. AAP will field candidates in New Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, and East Delhi, while Congress will focus on Chandni Chowk, Northeast Delhi, and Northwest Delhi. “Special circumstances” lead AAP and Congress to contest Lok Sabha polls separately in Punjab,” Wasnik said.
The alliance between Congress and AAP is part of the Opposition coalition known as INDIA, which aims to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming general elections.
In Gujarat, AAP will contest two out of 26 seats – Bharuch and Bhavnagar – leaving the remaining 24 seats for Congress candidates.
For Haryana’s ten seats, Congress will contest nine, while AAP will vie for one seat in Kurukshetra. Additionally, Congress will contest the lone seat in Chandigarh and two seats in Goa.
AAP MP Sandeep Pathak emphasized the necessity for an alternative amidst what he described as the erosion of democratic institutions, allegations of electoral manipulation, incarceration of opposition leaders, and economic hardships faced by the people.
“In the interest of the nation, we have set aside our individual political ambitions. This election is not about Congress or AAP, but about the larger cause of our country. It’s about safeguarding democracy and addressing the pressing issues confronting our citizens,” Pathak asserted.
