New Delhi, December 12

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday withdrew three bills aimed at replacing existing criminal laws and introduced a fresh set of draft legislations. Responding to the concerns raised by MPs who demanded sufficient time to study the new drafts, Shah explained that withdrawing and reintroducing the bills with the proposed changes incorporated was more efficient than bringing multiple amendments.  Discussion on the three new criminal law bills, which seek to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act (IEA), will take place on Thursday. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has allocated a total of 12 hours for the debate, after which voting will be held on Friday.

Amit Shah also clarified that only five sections have been tweaked, with most of the changes relating to grammatical and linguistic adjustments.
