Nagpur, January 13
India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, sent a clear message to China to resolve the border standoff or forget about normalized relations. In a firm address, he stressed the impossibility of maintaining “business as usual” while troops remain face-to-face on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Jaishankar highlighted the absurdity of expecting normal relations on other fronts while tensions simmer on the border. “China can not expect business as usual with border tensions simmering,” he added. “It is not possible on the one side you broke into fight with our soldiers and on the other side you expect business deals.” This blunt statement puts the onus on China to find a solution and disengage before expecting progress in other areas,” the External Affairs Minister said.
While acknowledging ongoing diplomatic efforts, Jaishankar made it clear that normalization will be a slow process. He emphasized the rise in deployment of forces on border even during lockdown indicating India’s unwavering commitment to border security.
Jaishankar on the question of a permanent seat for India at the UNSC while speaking at Nagpur in Maharashtra said that he noted the increasing international support for India’s permanent seat on the UN Security Council, adding, “With each passing year, the feeling in the world is that India should be there, and I can feel that support.”
“ The world does not give things easily and generously, sometimes you have to take it,” he said.
