NEW DELHI, MARCH 29
The Congress party has received a ₹1,823 crore notice from the Income Tax Department, a day after the Delhi High Court dismissed its plea challenging the tax notices. This latest notice encompasses penalties and interest charges for assessment years 2017-18 to 2020-21.
This development exacerbates the financial strain on the Congress, already grappling with a ₹200 crore penalty imposed by Income Tax authorities and the freezing of its funds. With no relief from the High Court, the party is now prepared to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.
The Congress has accused the BJP of implementing financial constraints and influencing tax authority actions as the Lok Sabha elections are on the horizon, slated to begin on April 19. Reacting to the development, in his post on X formerly known as Twitter, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pledged stringent action against those perceived as undermining democracy.
#BJPTaxTerrorism pic.twitter.com/SSkiolorvH
