Harjinder Singh Dhami, representing the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), re-elected as the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) consecutively third time on Wednesday. Dhami defeated his opponent, Balbir Singh Ghunnas, by a significant margin.
The SGPC polls took place at the Teja Singh Samundri hall, where Dhami received 118 votes, cementing his hold on the presidency. In contrast, his rival, Ghunnas, managed to secure only 17 votes.
Breaking with tradition, the SAD president Sukhbir Badal had announced Dhami’s candidature in advance. Ghunnas, on the other hand, was fielded by SAD (Sanyukt) president Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur.
This victory for Dhami mirrors his earlier success in the 2022 election, where he had secured 104 out of the 146 total votes, defeating rebel Akali leader Jagir Kaur, who received 42 votes.
After the victory, Sukhbir Badal shared a photograph with Dhami on his social media platform X.
