NEW DELHI, MARCH 15
The Supreme Court on Friday issued a stern rebuke to the State Bank of India(SBI) for its failure to provide comprehensive data on electoral bonds and directed it to reveal electoral bond numbers, alongside the previously shared information. Earlier ruling against the electoral bonds scheme, the Supreme Court directed the SBI to disclose all donation details from the past five years.
.During a hearing on a petition filed by the Election Commission, the Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with the incomplete data provided by SBI. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud demanded transparency from the State Bank of India and asked the bank to explain its reasons for providing incomplete data during the upcoming hearing on March 18.
The revelation of electoral bond numbers is crucial for establishing the nexus between donors and political parties. Electoral bonds, introduced by the BJP government in 2018 as an alternative to cash donations, were touted as a measure to enhance transparency in political funding. However, last month, the Supreme Court declared the scheme unconstitutional, citing concerns of potential quid pro quo.
