New Delhi, September 2

India’s Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday approved seven key schemes aimed at improving the lives and incomes of farmers, with a total allocation of Rs 14,235.30 crore ($1.7 billion). The largest of the initiatives is the Digital Agriculture Mission, which will receive Rs 2,817 crore. The mission aims to leverage digital technology, including AI and Big Data, to enhance agricultural practices. Key components include a comprehensive Agri Stack—covering farmers’ registries and crop records—and a Krishi Decision Support System that uses geospatial and weather data to optimize farming decisions.

Another significant initiative is the Crop Science for Food and Nutritional Security program, with a budget of Rs 3,979 crore. The scheme is designed to bolster climate resilience and ensure food security by 2047. It includes extensive research into plant genetics, the improvement of commercial crops, and the management of plant genetic resources.

The Cabinet also approved Rs 2,291 crore for Strengthening Agricultural Education, Management, and Social Sciences. This initiative aims to modernize agricultural research and education, aligning with India’s New Education Policy 2020 and focusing on the integration of digital technology, natural farming, and climate resilience.

A sum of Rs 1,702 crore has been earmarked for Sustainable Livestock Health and Production, which will enhance income from livestock and dairy sectors. The program includes measures for animal health management, veterinary education, and the development of dairy production technology.

The government has also allocated Rs 1,129.30 crore for the Sustainable Development of Horticulture, targeting income growth from horticulture crops, including tropical, sub-tropical, and medicinal plants.

Other approved schemes include Strengthening of Krishi Vigyan Kendra with an outlay of Rs 1,202 crore, aimed at expanding agricultural science centers, and Natural Resource Management, which will receive Rs 1,115 crore to promote sustainable farming practices.

These measures come as the government seeks to address challenges in the agricultural sector and boost rural incomes ahead of the 2024 general elections.
