New Delhi, January 19

In a measured response to recent diplomatic friction, the Iranian Foreign Ministry released a statement today reaffirming its commitment to “good neighbourliness and brotherhood” with Pakistan. The statement highlights the historic ties between the two nations and stresses the desire to maintain amicable relations.

Despite these conciliatory overtures, the statement also makes a firm demand: Pakistan must prevent the establishment of “terrorist bases” and the presence of armed groups on its soil. This point, presented as a “red line” for Iran’s national security, underscores the core source of current tensions.

Overall, the message from Iran is twofold: while prioritizing friendly relations with Pakistan, Tehran will not tolerate actions that threaten its security. This delicate balance suggests a cautious approach to navigating the current diplomatic challenge.
