Islamic State claimed responsibility for the devastating bombing that claimed 84 lives in Kerman, Iran, as reported by The New York Times on Thursday. The extremist group asserted their involvement via an official Telegram post, terming it a “dual martyrdom operation.”
According to The New York Times, the group’s Telegram account described how two militants approached a commemorative event at the tomb of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani. They then detonated explosive belts strapped to their bodies “near the grave of the hypocrite leader,” referencing General Suleimani, a revered and feared figure within Iran. The assassination of the Iranian military and security leader occurred four years ago in an American drone attack, leaving a lasting impact on the nation.
“We are shocked and saddened on the terrible bombings in the Kerman City of Iran. At this difficult time, we express our solidarity with the government and people of Iran. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and with the wounded,” said the Indian Ministry of External Affairs while reacting to the incident in a post on social media platform X formerly known as Twitter.
