The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a firm stance against universities offering M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) degrees, clarifying that such programs are not recognized under Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022. The UGC emphasized that higher educational institutions are prohibited from offering M.Phil. programs as per the regulations published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022.
In a directive to university authorities, the UGC urged immediate action to cease admissions to M.Phil. programs for the upcoming academic year, 2023-24. Additionally, students were advised against seeking admission to M.Phil. programs in light of the non-recognition status.
