New Delhi, December 8
In a landmark decision, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha on Friday. The announcement came after the House accepted the findings of the Ethics Committee, which concluded that Moitra’s conduct had been “immoral and indecent” for an MP.
While announcing the decision, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that this House accepts the conclusions of the Committee that MP Mahua Moitra’s conduct was immoral and indecent as an MP and therefore, it is not appropriate for her to continue as an MP.
The decision to expel Moitra has sparked heated debate, with the ruling party supporting the move and the opposition condemning it as a politically motivated attack. Moitra herself has termed the expulsion a “witch-hunt” and a “death of parliamentary democracy.”
Following the announcement, the Lok Sabha has been adjourned till December 11.
The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee today Friday tabled a report recommending the expulsion of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra. The report, presented by committee chairman and BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar, accuses Moitra of “unethical conduct” involving bribery and misuse of parliamentary credentials.
The charges against Moitra stem from allegations that she raised questions in Parliament on behalf of businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for “illegal gratifications.” The Ethics Committee examined complaints filed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, a former partner of Moitra, who accused her of sharing her Lok Sabha login credentials with unauthorized persons.
The committee, after a thorough investigation, concluded that the charges against Moitra hold merit. Their report recommends her expulsion from the Lok Sabha, citing her actions as a serious breach of privilege and a threat to national security.
Reacting to her expulsion as a Member of the Lok Sabha, Moitra said that if this government thought that by shutting me up they could do away with the Adani issue, let me tell you this that this kangaroo court has only shown to all of India that the haste and the abuse of due process you have used demonstrates how important Adani is to you. “And to what length you will go to harass a single woman MP into shutting her into submission,” she said.
” This is vendetta politics of BJP. This is injustice, unacceptable, and unfortunate. They killed democracy. Mahua will win the battle. The people will give justice, said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
