New Delhi, December 29

Responding to India’s renewed request for Hafiz Saeed’s extradition, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson ,Arindam Bagchi, stressed on Friday that Saeed, “wanted in numerous cases in India and a UN proscribed terrorist,” was the subject of a recent extradition request backed by “relevant supporting documents.”

“We have been flagging the issue of his activities for some time,” Bagchi told in a weekly press conference, reiterating India’s long-standing demand for Saeed to face trial. He declined to comment directly on Hafiz Saeed’s son contesting elections in Pakistan, but raised concerns about the “mainstreaming of radical elements” in Pakistani politics.

“Such developments have serious implications for the security of our region,” Bagchi warned. “India will continue to monitor all developments that have an impact on our national security.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday that it had received a request from Indian authorities seeking to extradite Hafiz Saeed, a figure designated as a terrorist by the United Nations, in connection with a money laundering case.

The Pakistan Ministry said that currently, no bilateral extradition treaty exists between Pakistan and India. No further details about the request or Pakistan’s potential response were immediately available, as per reports.
