3 criminal bills passed: No more ‘tarikh-pe-tarikh’, says Amit Shah

New Delhi, December 20

In a historic move, Parliament ushered in a new era for justice delivery in India on Wednesday, passing three bills to overhaul the nation’s antiquated criminal justice system. Home Minister Amit Shah, spearheading the legislation in Lok Sabha, declared these laws a decisive break from the past, promising “swifter justice” and eliminating the notorious “tarikh pe tarikh” (repeated adjournments) plaguing Indian courts.

Amit Shah criticized the existing legal framework, comprising the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Indian Evidence Act, and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), as relics of a “punishment-obsessed” colonial mindset. He lamented the agonizing waiting game endured by both victims and accused due to prolonged trials, while finger-pointing between police, courts, and the government further hampered efficiency.

The new laws seek to address these long-standing woes by streamlining procedures, setting stricter timelines, and fostering a human-centric approach.
