Prime Minister Narendra Modi will contest from Varanasi, while Home Minister Amit Shah from Gandhinagar in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP announced on Saturday. BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde shared details about the party’s first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections during a press conference held in New Delhi.
The decision regarding the candidacies was taken during a meeting attended by the Prime Minister and BJP President J P Nadda on February 29. Among the prominent names on the list are Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Bhupender Yadav, Mansukh Mandaviya, Sarbananda Sonowal, Kiren Rijiju, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Arjun Ram Meghwal, G Kishan Reddy, Arjun Munda, and Smriti Irani, who will contest from Amethi. Former Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Chouhan and Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar are also among the candidates.
Tawde highlighted that the list includes a diverse array of candidates, comprising 34 central ministers and ministers of states, as well as Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and two former chief ministers. Of the candidates, 28 are women, 47 are below the age of 50, and there are 27 Scheduled Caste candidates and 18 Scheduled Tribes candidates. Additionally, the list includes 57 OBC candidates.

Modi emphasized his anticipation to serve the people of Kashi for the third consecutive term, acknowledging the commitment made during his 2014 election campaign to fulfill their aspirations and uplift the most marginalized sections of society. As the BJP announced candidates for select constituencies, Modi conveyed his congratulations to those nominated and wished them success. Emphasizing the party’s governance track record and commitment to inclusive progress, Modi expressed confidence in securing the trust and support of the nation’s 1.4 billion citizens. He anticipated that their blessings would further empower the BJP in realizing the collective aspirations of the Indian populace and fostering a developed India.
