New Delhi, December 27

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday praised India’s “incremental progress” as a close ally amidst global turmoil, and expressed hope for a visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi next year.

Meeting with the External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, Putin lauded the “steadfast” relationship between the two countries, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. He acknowledged Jaishankar’s discussions with Russian ministers Denis Manturov and Sergei Lavrov, offering “guidance on the further development of our ties.”

Putin commended India’s position on the Ukraine conflict, saying he had “advised” Modi on the situation “many times” and appreciated his “willingness to do his utmost.” He avoided explicit mention of Russia’s invasion or India’s calls for a ceasefire. Jaishankar, in a tweet, described conveying Modi’s “warm greetings” and a “personal message” to Putin. He also said he “appreciated” Putin’s guidance on strengthening India-Russia relations.

Putin extended a personal invitation to Modi to visit Russia, stating, “We will be glad to see our dear friend, Prime Minister Modi paying a visit to Russia…Please tell him that we expect him here.” He acknowledged India’s busy political schedule in 2024, with general elections upcoming, and wished “our friends success in that.”
