CHANDIGARH, FEBRUARY 26

Haryana’s Home Minister Anil Vij on Monday announced in the Assembly that a CBI probe would be initiated into the killing of Nafe Singh Rathee, the state unit chief of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). Vij assured the Assembly that if the members deemed a CBI investigation necessary, the case would indeed be handed over to the agency. This announcement came amidst discussions on an adjournment motion introduced by the Congress addressing concerns over Haryana’s law-and-order situation. While Vij maintained that the police were conducting a thorough investigation, he acknowledged the Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s assertion that the case might require the involvement of a central agency. Consequently, Vij committed to announcing a CBI probe. Additionally, he refuted allegations from the opposition regarding a collapse in the state’s law-and-order mechanism.

Nafe Singh Rathee, the president of INLD’s Haryana unit, fell victim to a fatal shooting by unidentified assailants in Jhajjar district on Sunday. Rathee, a former MLA, was traveling in an SUV when the assailants, driving a car, launched the attack in Bahadurgarh town.

In a disturbing sequence of events captured on CCTV in Jhajjar district, five men disembarked from a vehicle and unleashed indiscriminate gunfire at the Toyota Fortuner. Consequently, Nafe Singh Rathi and one of his companions lost their lives, while two others sustained severe injuries. The footage also shows the car tailing the SUV as it approached a railway crossing, followed by its return approximately 20 minutes later, marking a significant development in the investigation.

As per reports, the police have booked 12 persons, including former Bahadurgarh MLA Naresh Kaushik in connection with the case.
