New Delhi, December 21

Hailing the passing of the three criminal law bills — Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, and Bharatiya Saksha (Second) Bill — in Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that it was a “watershed moment in our history”.

“In our Amrit Kaal, these legal reforms redefine our legal framework to be more relevant and empathy driven,” said the Prime Minister.

In a significant move, the Rajya Sabha on Thursday unanimously passed three amended Bills moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to overhaul the criminal justice system. The Bills – the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023 – were cleared by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Union Minister Shah lauded the significance of three new bills, underscoring the Modi government’s unwavering commitment to combat crime and terrorism. Shah highlighted the legislative breakthroughs said that for the first time in history, our laws define terrorism, organized crimes, and economic offences, closing every legal gap.

“For the first time in history, we have laws that provide clear direction of trial in absentia in the case of fugitives,” shah further said.

He continued, “Introducing community service as a penalty reinstates our civilizational ethos of ‘Punishment for Justice.’ I commend PM @narendramodi Ji for steering India towards self-reliance, breaking free from our colonial past, and eliminating the remnants of subjugation.”
