CHANDIGARH, FEBRUARY 23
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced on Friday a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a job for the sister of young farmer Shubhkaran Singh, who was killed during a protest at Khanauri border. Mann expressed solidarity with the bereaved family, emphasizing the state government’s unwavering support in their time of need.
Mann assured comprehensive assistance to the family, pledging both social and economic support as a moral obligation of the state government. He reiterated the government’s commitment to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the tragic death of the young farmer, vowing to ensure exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
The Chief Minister condemned the incident, labeling it as a “bullet of hatred” targeting a citizen exercising democratic rights. He emphasized the necessity of holding the culprits accountable without leniency.
Mann declared that upon completion of the investigation, FIRs would be filed against those accountable for the youth’s demise, ensuring stringent punishment. He also denounced the hindrance faced by farmers attempting to participate in peaceful protests, citing it as unjust, unwarranted, and intolerable.
He underscored the significant contributions of Punjabis to India’s freedom struggle, self-reliance post-independence, and national security, emphasizing the need to protect their rights and dignity amidst ongoing agrarian protests.
In addition to it, the Haryana Police disclosed on Friday a reassessment regarding the application of the National Security Act (NSA) on farm union leaders in Ambala district. Inspector General of Police (Ambala Range) Sibash Kabiraj affirmed the decision, declaring that the NSA invocation would not be pursued.
Kabiraj appealed to protesters and their leaders, urging them to prioritize peace and work in tandem with authorities to maintain law and order. He underscored the significance of cooperation during this period of uncertainty.
