The Punjab Police have thwarted a major cross-border terror plot, recovering an improvised explosive device (IED) believed to have been pushed into India by Pakistan’s ISI-backed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). The operation, carried out by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Tarn Taran police, led to the seizure of the device in the Naushera Pannuan area of Tarn Taran district.
Police say the IED was linked to BKI operatives Harwinder Rinda and Lakhbir Landa, both believed to be based in Pakistan.Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said officers acted swiftly on intelligence inputs about the movement of an explosive consignment from across the border.
“The IED was secured and carefully transported to a safe location, where it was successfully neutralised in a controlled detonation by our bomb disposal unit,” DGP Yadav said in a statement from Chandigarh.
He added that the prompt response of the AGTF and local police had averted a “major tragedy” in the border state. Preliminary investigations suggest the device was intended for use in a targeted attack aimed at disrupting public peace, said ADGP Promod Ban.
DIG Gurmeet Singh Chauhan confirmed that a case has been registered at Sirhali Police Station under multiple sections of the Explosive Substances Act and Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigations are underway to identify and arrest local accomplices linked to the plot.
