Microsoft will channel more than US$17.5bn into India as part of its largest-ever Asian investment, chief executive Satya Nadella said after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Tuesday — a move that deepens the tech giant’s bet on the country’s expanding AI ecosystem. The discussion comes as India positions itself as a global centre for Artificial Intelligence development, powered by a vast pool of digital talent and a government keen to attract strategic technology investment.
Modi, responding to Nadella’s post on X, said the world’s optimism about India’s AI potential was “heartening” and predicted the investment would create new opportunities for the country’s young workforce. “The youth of India will harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet,” he wrote.
The announcement marks another significant commitment by a US tech major amid growing collaboration between Washington and New Delhi on emerging technologies and digital governance.
In a post on X, Nadella thanked Modi for what he called an “inspiring conversation” on India’s AI trajectory, announcing that Microsoft would put US$17.5bn into strengthening the country’s AI infrastructure, talent and sovereign technology capacity — the company’s biggest investment in Asia.
